North Portland is an immensely diverse quadrant of Portland with 11 distinct neighborhoods within its borders that includes Arbor Lodge, Bridgeton, Cathedral Park, East Columbia, Hayden Island, Kenton, Humboldt, Boise, Overlook, Piedmont, Portsmouth, St. Johns’, and University Park. Each of these areas has a vibe, but what is common to the entire area is the food scene. North Portland has some of the best food cart fare anywhere. St. John’s Food & Beer Porch Pod has over a dozen food carts that feature locally made beer and cider, all of which you can enjoy in a covered seating area. Prost Marketplace, in the Boise neighborhood, serves Texas barbecue, smash burgers, Thai and the best German beer in town in the most extensive food cart pod with a covered and heated seating area. Any foody will enjoy the dining opportunities in any North Portland neighborhood.
Unlike the suburbs on the west side of Portland, North Portland is comprised of walkable neighborhoods. The local brew pub, café, restaurant, consignment shop, or houseware store is typically within walking or biking distance of your home. Each neighborhood is a community with residents centered around the local commercial district that aims to fill your needs.
If you desire to spend more time outdoors, North Portland is home to large parks for leisure as well as recreation. Kelly Point Park is a city park on the Columbia River with a dog park, picnic areas, a 40-mile loop trail to hike or bike, and a canoe launch. Wildlife is abundant here so it’s a popular place for birdwatchers and nature photographers. And in the Piedmont neighborhood is Peninsula Park, a public 16-acre park with an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits, reservable covered picnic shelters and a stunning rose garden. The Peninsula Park Rose Garden features 5,000 different rose plants of 60 varieties for visitors to explore and even hosts rose care classes.
Much of North Portland consists of older bungalows, large craftsman, Victorian and Old Portland style homes, but as with every area, the neighborhoods are expanding. Contemporary condominiums, rowhome-style townhomes and modern single-family homes have been built in recent years, so if you desire the ease of walking to your favorite restaurants and appreciate the art in eclectic storefronts, North Portland could be a place to call home.
